J&K CIVIC POLL ENDS, COUNTING ON OCTOBER 20

SRINAGAR : Much like the previous three phases, the final phase of elections to the urban local bodies in the Valley continued the trend of low voter turnout, with only 4.2% voters exercising their franchise in Srinagar and Ganderbal districts on Tuesday. As many as 150 candidates were contesting in the 36 wards of the Srinagar Municipal Council and Ganderbal Municipal Committee. The fourphase municipal polls for 72 municipal committees, six municipal councils and two municipal corporatio­ns have a total of 3,372 nomination­s filed for 1,145 wards. In the last three phases, Valley recorded only 6.7% voting, while Jammu and Ladakh regions saw 68.7% and 62.1% polling, respective­ly. At the end of all four phases, the state recorded an aggregate voter turnout of 35.1%. Counting of votes will be held on October 20.
