Former bureaucrat, governor Sidhu dead

NEW DELHI: Shivinder Singh Sidhu, who served as the governor of Meghalaya, Manipur and Goa, passed away on Thursday, according to reports.

Regional news website Northeast Now reported that Sidhu, a 1952-batch Indian Administra­tive Services (IAS) officer, was 89 at the time of his demise.

He was the secretary-general of the Internatio­nal Civil Aviation Organizati­on from August 1988 to August 1991. Prior to that he had served as district magistrate of Kanpur.

His gubernator­ial career began in 2004 when he was posted in Manipur, where he remained as governor till 2008.

“I on behalf of the people of Meghalaya express my deepest condolence­s to the family of Late SS Sidhu, who served the State as the Governor. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said in a tweet on Friday. Manipur governor Najma Heptullah too tweeted her condolence­s to the former governor’s family members.

Sidhu held the charge as the governor of Meghalaya from 2007 to 2008 before being appointed the governor of Goa from 2008 to 2011, the website said.
