Support pours in after Wozniacki reveals arthritis

SINGAPORE: World number three Caroline Wozniacki said she hopes to become an inspiratio­n for fellow sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis as her shock diagnosis drew support and sympathy on Friday. The 28-year-old Dane revealed she was suffering from the condition after crashing out of the WTA Finals against Elina Svitolina late on Thursday, ending her title defence.

BASEL: Roger Federer won his 17th consecutiv­e match at the Swiss Indoors on Thursday, dispatchin­g Jan-lennard Struff 6-3, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals. The top seed, unbeaten in Basel since 2013, is an eight-time winner of his home event.

TENNIS PRODIGY DEAD

SYDNEY: A former Australian tennis prodigy who won the Wimbledon junior title in 2002 and was once touted as the next big thing has died aged 34, officials and reports said on Friday. Todd Reid, who was forced to quit the game in 2005 after a series of injuries and glandular fever, passed away this week. The cause of death in unknown, although local media said there were no suspicious circumstan­ces.

OSAKA PULLS OUT

SINGAPORE: Naomi Osaka’s WTA Finals debut ended in tears as she was forced to retire against Kiki Bertens, handing the Dutchwoman a surprise spot in the semi-finals. Bertens won the first set 6-3 in 47 minutes before US Open champion Osaka forfeited the match.

LOS ANGELES: NBA icon Michael Jordan is branching out into esports, investing in the parent company of Team Liquid, axiomatic. Jordan, a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls and now owner of the league’s Charlotte Hornets, is making his first foray into the burgeoning world of esports. He was one of two new investors announced on Thursday by axiomatic, along with Declaratio­n Capital, the family office of Washington Dc-based billionair­e David Rubenstein.
