Cable operator arrested for murder, extortion

NEW DELHI : A 30-year-old cable operator-turned-gangster, carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest for four cases of murder, attempts to murder, robberies and extortion, was arrested by the Delhi Police’s crime branch on Friday. Police said the man is a member of Nasir gang, a rival group of the Chhenu gang.

Police identified the man as Mohammad Rashid alias Cablewala, a resident of Chauhan Bangar in Delhi. Rashid, police said, was declared a proclaimed offender and had previously been involved in four cases of murders, cases of attempts to murder, robberies and arms act.

Additional commission­er of police (crime) Rajiv Ranjan said that in April 2017, Rashid and his associates had killed Mohammad Qamar and Imran in northeast Delhi’s Jafrabad. Since then Rashid was on the run while all his associates had been arrested. A reward of R 1 lakh was also declared on his arrest. “A trap was laid on Friday following input that Rashid would leave India from Delhi airport. A team spotted him at terminal 3 and he was arrested,” Ranjan said.
