THE DMRC, MINISTRY OFFICIALS SAID, HAS BEEN ASKED LOOK INTO THE TECHNICAL MODALITIES FOR RELAXATION IN FARE

NEW DELHI: Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri Monday said efforts were being made to provide concession in Metro fare to senior citizens and students. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), ministry officials said, has been asked look into the technical modalities for implementation.

“I have discussed with DMRC chief Mangu Singh how to provide concessions to citizens above 65 years of age and students travelling in Delhi Metro,” Puri said at the inauguration of Raja Nahar Singh-escort Mujesar Metro line in Ballabgarh.

The proposal to give concession to students and senior citizens was floated after there was widespread criticism of DMRC following the fare hike in 2017. The Metro fare was increased twice—in May and October-based on the recommendation of the Fare Fixation Committee. The hike had led to a blame game between the Delhi government and the Centre.

College students had protested against the fare hike. Officials said efforts were made to provide some concessions to students, senior citizens and the differently abled people.

A ministry official aware of the development said matters related to metro fares is decided by the Fare Fixation Committee, an independent body. Puri said once the committee gives its recommendation, the scheme will be applicable.

The main challenge is in the implementation of the scheme, as currently there is no system to distinguish between different metro users. A DMRC spokesperson said, “The DMRC is examining the technicalities involved in this issue.”

Puri once again spoke about the construction of Metro Phase-iv, which is yet to be approved by the Delhi government. “I’m in constant touch with Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. He has assured me that the Delhi government is working on it,” Puri said. Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot, Delhi government officials said, has directed the transport department to prepare a note on the phase-iv plan for cabinet approval.
