To ease traffic, half-done Kishanganj road under bridge to be opened today
NEWDELHI: It may be only half-finished and without a deadline, but the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to inaugurate the much-delayed Kishanganj road under bridge (RUB) on Thursday to ease traffic.the project will be inaugurated by Union science and technology minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.
On December 2, Hindustan Times had reported that the unfinished project, approved by the then unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi to widen the undivided t wo-lane under bridge, saw an over 320% increase in cost. Proposed in 1994, the 1.5-km stretch below a railway line in Central Delhi’s Kishanganj is one of the most delayed infrastructure projects in the national Capital.
Senior Corporation officials said the civic agency is opening a portion of the RUB to ease the traffic chaos. “At least one carriageway can start moving,”a senior corporation official said.
“Till date, only a concrete box has been constructed, while commuters still use the old carriageway,” said a senior North Corporation official. The underpass, located around 500 metres from the Azad Market traffic signal, is an important link between areas such as Azad Market, Pul Bangash, I nderlok, Shastri Nagar and Gulabi Bagh. However, the area becomes choked with traffic during peak hour.
The project involves opening a link between central Delhi and west Delhi.
