5 personnel injured in gunfight

SRINAGAR: Five security men were injured on Saturday in a gunfight between militants and security forces on the outskirts of Srinagar, in Mujgund village.

Police sources said the five security personnel, including a soldier, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper and three policemen, were injured in the fighting in Mujgund area.

“The injured men have been shifted to a hospital,” an official said.

Army and police launched a joint cordon operation in Mujgund village based on reports about the presence of militants in the area. Sources said that two to three militants are believed to be hiding in the area.

Locals said three houses in the area had been damaged in the fighting.

“As the cordon was tightened, the militants opened fire, triggering an encounter,” a police officer said.

1 SOLDIER KILLED, 3 INJURED IN ASSAM

An Army soldier was killed and three others injured in an encounter with suspected insurgents in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday.

“The encounter happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. One soldier died while three others have been injured,” said Rohit Meena, superinten­dent of police, Longding.

The insurgents were suspected to belong to the Naga insurgent outfit, the NSCN(I-M), Meena said, adding that the Army has launched a cordon and search operation.

Defence sources confirmed “at 5.30 am there was a firefight in Longding with insurgents. We lost a jawan and three others have been injured”.
