U Mumba outclass Warriors in PKL

VISAKHAPAT­NAM: U Mumba produced an all-round performanc­e to beat Bengal Warriors 31-20 in the inter-zone challenge week of Pro Kabaddi here on Saturday.

The defensive trio of Fazel Atrachali, Surender Singh and Dharmaraj Cherlathan picked up 11 tackle points and tormented Bengal Warriors raiders throughout the match at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Siddharth Desai was the top scoring raider for U Mumba as he scored 7 points. Maninder Singh had a quiet match for Bengal Warriors but still ended up being their top scorer with 5 raid points.

Both teams’ defence began brightly as they picked up tackle points to get going. Bengal Warriors held the early advantage as they led 5-2 after five minutes. U Mumba fought back in the next couple of minutes with Rohit Baliyan picking up a few raid points. It was all square at 5-5 after 10 minutes of action.

U Mumba shifted gears, scoring five points in three minutes to lead 10-7. Siddharth then sprung into action and picked up three points in two raids to give U Mumba 15-9 lead at the first half.

The second half began with U Mumba inflicting an all out to extend their lead to 18-10 in the 21st minute. From there, U Mumba controlled proceeding­s and sealed the win in relative comfort.

The 45-year-old from Sri Lanka produced his second consecutiv­e error-free round to take control with a three-day total of 18-under-198 at the Karnataka Golf Associatio­n (KGA) course.

Om Prakash Chouhan (67) of Mhow and Delhi’s Rashid Khan (68) occupied tied second place at 13-under-203 at the Rs. 60 lakh event.

EQUESTRIAN COACH PRAISES INDIA

NEW DELHI: The Indian men’s equestrian team has a golden chance of a maiden qualificat­ion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, said foreign coach Rodolphe Scherer.

“Asian Games showed if Army, government and federation can work together, results will come,” Scherer told PTI on the sidelines of the Delhi Horse Show on Saturday.

“If they can’t work together, then future is dark. Having said that, India has a very good chance to qualify,” the Frenchman added.

India won a record two medals at the 2018 Asian Games including the silver won by Fouaad Mirza. Scherer has been working with the Indian team for the past two years. India will have to compete against Indonesia, Thailand, China and South Africa for the final two Olympic spots.
