NEW DELHI: After reaching out to the scheduled caste community through its ‘Samrasta Khichdi’ event, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi unit will hold a similar ‘dahi chura’ event to connect with the purvanchali community of the city ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Delhi BJP’S purvanchali wing has organized the ‘dahi chura’ feast on Sunday at state unit chief Manoj Tiwari’s residence at North Avenue on the occasion of makar sankranti (January 14). Close to 5,000 people, mainly party workers from the purvanchal community, are expected to attend the event.

“Everyone is invited for the event. Makar sankranti is a special festival for purvanchalis. We traditionally serve dahi chura on the auspicious occasion. We have made arrangements where people will sit and eat dahi chura together. Several senior party leaders are going to attend the event,” said Manish Singh, president of purvanchal wing of Delhi BJP.

Tiwari, a Member of Parliament from Northeast Delhi and also the party’s purvanchali face, had organised an event at Talkatora auditorium to celebrate makar sankranti last year too. “I have been organizing this event for the past four years. This is an important festival for everyone, including purvanchalis. On Sunday, we will also celebrate the passing of a recent bill to provide 10% quote to eco- nomically weaker section in general category,” said Tiwari.

The event, party officials said, is a move to galvanise the support of the purvanchal community, which has emerged as a key vote bank over the years in Delhi’s politics. The community plays a decisive role in nearly 30-odd Assembly seats. In 2016, the BJP had decided to appoint Tiwari as the Delhi unit chief to woo this segment, which earlier used to vote for the Congress and later shifted to Aam Aadmi Party.

As the party gears up for the Lok Sabha elections, it is making efforts to make a dent in the AAP’S vote bank in slums and unauthorized colonies.
