INDIA HAVE HOSTED THE MEN’S WORLD CUP THRICE PREVIOUSLY — MUMBAI 1982, NEW DELHI 2010 AND BHUBANESWAR 2018

NEW DELHI: India is well in line to host the men’s World Cup for the third time in 12 years after the international hockey federation (FIH) announced the list of bidders on Tuesday. Germany, Malaysia and Spain are the other three countries who have shown interest in hosting the showpiece event four years down the line. However, while the three above mentioned nations have proposed to organise the event from July 1-17, 2022, India want to conduct it from January 13-29, 2023.

India have hosted the men’s World Cup thrice previously — Mumbai 1982, New Delhi 2010 and Bhubaneswar 2018 — along with holding the last two editions of the junior men’s World Cup too — New Delhi 2013 and Lucknow 2016. In addition, India have also proposed to conduct the women’s World Cup. However, the FIH confirmed that India have opted to host only one of the two events for the same dates. If India is awarded the women’s tournament, they will host it for the first time.

Germany, Australia and New Zealand are the other contenders for the women’s World Cup. While Germany wants to host the tournament in July 2022, India, Australia and New Zealand have opted for the dates in January 2023. The FIH will finalise its decision in June.
