NOD TO REPAIR WAZIRABAD FLYOVER, ₹3CR FOR PROJECT

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government’s public works department (PWD) has got the go-ahead to repair the Wazirabad flyover on Outer Ring Road near north Delhi’s Signature Bridge. The government has sanctioned around ₹3 crore to strengthen the flyover and its slip road.

According to PWD officials, carriageway decks on which the vehicles ply and beams will be strengthened and expansion joints repaired.

The 800-metre flyover is situated near Majnu Ka Tila on the busy Outer Ring Road and passes over Wazirabad crossing, Choudhary Fateh Singh Road and Nehru Vihar Road. The flyover also connects Signature Bridge with the help of a loop.

“This six-lane flyover caters to heavy vehicular movement and wear and tear is quite natural. We will strengthen the carriageways by laying a fresh layer of asphalt and repair the expansion joints. The work would be carried out in phased manner. Administrative approval has been granted and an estimate of R 2.90 crore has been sanctioned for the work,” a senior PWD official said.

The PWD official said around one lakh vehicles use the flyover everyday to reach their destinations in north, north-east and ISBT Kashmeri Gate.

The proposal to strengthen the flyover was sent for approval by the chief engineer (east) on December 10 last year.

“Tenders would be invited for the work, which may take some time. We will request the traffic department to restrict vehicular movement only after work is alloted. We hope to start work in two-three months,” the official said.

Last year, in January, the PWD had carried out major repair work on the Lajpat Nagar flyover on Ring Road after 8-10 inches wide gaps developed between one of the five girders, raising safety concerns.

In December, the department conducted maintenance works on the Raja Garden flyover in west Delhi.
