NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old Indian Engineering Services (IES) officer was found hanging inside his rented Delhi Development Authority (DDA) flat in south Delhi’s Munirka on Friday night, police said.

According to investigators, the IES officer — who was posted as an assistant director with a Central government ministry — allegedly was depressed and hanged himself. The police found the flat locked from inside.

The police said the officer may have been stressed because he wanted to get into the Indian Administrative Services(ias) or the India Police Services(ips). “We are probing if he was under stress and killed himself due to that,” said a senior police officer, who asked not to be named.

No suicide note was recovered from his possession or from the flat where the man was found hanging from a ceiling fan’s iron hook. The officer hailed from Rewa in Madhya Pradesh. He was living in the rented first floor DDA flat with his three batch- mates.

Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Devender Arya said the incident came to their notice around 11pm when the police control room received a call. A team from the Vasant Vihar police station rushed to the flat and found that the officer had hanged himself. The man was brought down and rushed to a private hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Police said that the officer’s three friends told them that they were living in the flat for the last four months. On Friday evening, the friends had left for a shopping mall while the officer decided to stay back. Around 9pm, the trio returned and found the flat locked from inside.

When repeated knocks on the door and phone calls to the officer went unanswered, the friends arranged a ladder from a neighbours and climbed up to the backside balcony of the flat. There they found the officer hanging, the police said. “His batchmates told us that he was depressed as he was not able to get into the IAS or IPS. We have informed his family,” the officer added.
