K’taka scraps Tipu Sultan event

BENGALURU: Karnataka’s new BJP government led by BS Yediyurapp­a on Tuesday cancelled the birth anniversar­y celebratio­n of Tipu Sultan, the 18th century ruler of Mysore, terming it as “controvers­ial and communal”.

The decision was taken on a petition by BJP leader KG Bopaiah, who hails from Kodagu district where violence was reported when it was first celebrated in 2015. BENGALURU:A week after the Congress-janata Dal (Secular) coalition was toppled in Karnataka, former chief minister HD Kumaraswam­y says internal bickering in the Congress destabilis­ed his government.

“I had expected this from the very beginning. The BJP tried to destabilis­e it. There was internal bickering in the Congress that added fuel,” he said in an interview to Hindustan Times on

Tuesday.
