NEWDELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday demanded the resignation of Delhi Assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel after a Delhi court awarded a sixmonth jail term to him and his son in a trespassing case. The party also questioned chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s alleged silence on the matter.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had always been claiming it has “honest politicians”. “Why is Kejriwal silent even after the conviction of a senior leader, who is occupying and important constitutional post? He should have taken action against him. This clearly shows tainted leaders have got the protection of Arvind Kejriwal,” Tiwari said.

Reacting to the BJP’S allegations, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai said the district court’s order would be challenged in the sessions court. “Whatever is the legal way to resolve this issue, that will be taken. The order will be challenged soon,” he said

Demanding Goel’s resignation, Vijender Gupta, leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly, said it is for the first time a sitting Speaker has been convicted. Gupta said, “Goel must resign on moral grounds, as he has failed to maintain the dignity of his constitutional post. Kejriwal is equally responsible as he elevated an MLA charged for criminal offence to the post of a Speaker.”

With assembly elections just a few months away, BJP members said this was going to a big issue in the elections as Goel held an important post.

Tiwari alleged several leaders in AAP are facing criminal cases. “Kejriwal will have to tell the people of Delhi why there are a large number of leaders in AAP facing criminal cases.”

NEWDELHI: A BSES employee was stabbed by a group of men, allegedly for resisting their attempt to snatch his mobile phone, in west Delhi’s Dwarka early Friday.

Sanjay Sharma (38) received two stab wounds in his abdomen. He is recuperating at Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital, cops said.

The incident took place near Vardhaman Market in Dwarka Sector 3 around 4.15am when Sharma and his helper, Ratan Thakur, were returning after attending to a complaint of power failure. A case of attempt to murder was registered at Dwarka North police station. Anto Alphonse, DCP (Dwarka) said attackers are yet to be identified.

The BSES, in a statement, said Sharma was stabbed for resisting a phone snatching. Chaman Lal, a telephone operator with BSES, said, “When they were returning, four-five men in an auto-rickshaw rammed their bicycle. When they fell, the robbers tried to snatch Sharma’s phone. When he resisted, they stabbed him. Thakur raised an alarm and the robbers picked up the phone and fled,” he said. Lal, whose office is close to the spot, rushed out and then called the cops.

PHONE OF SPEAKER’S SECRETARY SNATCHED The mobile phone of the secretary of the Delhi Assembly speaker was snatched by motorcycle-borne men in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar Thursday the police said. Ajay Rawal, secretary to speaker Ram Niwas Goel, said he was walking to the local market in Ambika Vihar around 7.15pm when three men snatched his iphone 6. “They were so swift that they disappeared before I could even react,” said Rawal.

Rawal said he couldn’t note down the motorcycle’s number but can identify the suspects. A Koan, DCP (outer district), said a case of snatching was registered.
