MHA: Sympathetic, but unhappy with protest

- HT Correspondent

NEWDELHI: The Centre is “sympathetic” towards the policemen who were allegedly assaulted by lawyers, and extremely unhappy with the top-leadership of the Delhi Police, said a senior government official with the ministry of home affairs (MHA) who did not wish to be named.

“The government is also unhappy with those police personnel who took to the streets to protest on Tuesday,” he said, adding that action against them is likely after normalcy returned.

The official said that Union home minister Amit Shah took stock of the situation and Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla and other senior officials briefed him late in the evening as well.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. The judicial inquiry report will decide on the next course of action,” a second senior home ministry official said and added, “A uniformed emergency service, however, cannot behave like a mob. There is a procedure through which their grievance was to be highlighted.”

“We have received a report from the Delhi Police,” a MHA spokesperson said but refused to give out details. The MHA had asked for a report soon after the clash at the Tis Hazari court complex was brought under control on Saturday.
