Govt gives anti-drug activist’s wife a job

NEW DELHI: A year after a local drug mafia gunned down Taimur Nagar resident Rupesh Basoya in front of his children, Delhi government on Sunday appointed his wife to the Delhi Waqf Board.

Basoya, 34, was allegedly killed for opposing the gang in the area. His killing had led to protests and the Delhi government coming down on the Centre, which controls the Delhi Police in the city.

As part of his outreach programme ahead of the Assembly elections next year, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday visited the area in Okhla constituency and handed over the appointment letter to Basoya’s wife, Monu.

Kejriwal also paid condolences to the family in the programme.

Addressing the gathering,

Kejriwal said that he considered himself the elder son of every family of Delhi, and so it was his responsibility to provide a comfortable life to the people.

“Members from Rupesh’s Gurjar community and his village visited me a few days back to thank me for helping Rupesh’s family. I would like to thank them instead, for trusting a common man with a huge responsibility five years ago, and for voting for an honest party in Delhi. All the development that is happening in Delhi is because the people have voted an honest party to power. A common man is the chief minister of Delhi,” Kejriwal said in the event.

He added, “You can come to me for any help without any hesitation, and I will help you in whatever capacity I can, as an individual, as a human and as the chief minister of Delhi.”

Since Basoya was not a Delhi government servant, the government had to revise the policy. “We decided on doing that to provide a stable and better future for the family,” he said.

Kejriwal also hit out at the “poor” law and order situation in the city and appealed Union home minister Amit Shah to take stringent steps to streamline the security arrangements in the national capital.

“The city’s law and order situation is poor and grave and the Delhi government is doing whatever it can to improve it. We have installed CCTV cameras and are installing street lights in the city. I appeal to the Union home minister to take stringent steps to streamline the security arrangements in Delhi,” he said in the event.
