Dealing with unemployment

- Anshul Vashisht letters@hindustantimes.com

nIn a country, where over 22% people of the total population find it difficult to make both ends meet, existence of issues related to employment is not something to be surprised of. According to Government reports, over31 million people in the country are jobless. On the contrary, over 24 lakh central and state government jobs remained vacant in the year 2018. The primary reason for these astonishing facts is ‘Employability’. Even though the nation has countless graduates but employability still remains an issue. There are several reasons that have birth to this demon of employability:

THE FOUNDATION: SCHOOLS

Schools play a pivotal role in the development of an individual’s personality. Children develop traits and habits during the schooling years. However,in schools, students are taught different subjects to get through different grades and the entire schooling process has become marks centric and not student centric. The educationists must realise that nobody hires a mark sheet! Thus, holistic development of personality should be emphasised upon in schools.

Sessions on significantskills like communication, confidence, public speaking, and creativity etc. should be made an integral part of the school’s curriculum. One of the major reasons behind the ever increasing list of unemployed people is the absence of soft skills training during the learning years.

Moreover, if we wish to have adults who are punctual, ethically and morally upright, proficient and happy individuals, we need to imbibe these traits in them when they are most susceptible to change.

Thus, life skills should be taught to the students through experiential leaning so that they have a growth mind-set instead of a fixed mind-set.

THE STRUCTURE: COLLEGES

In an average Indian college, one can find hundreds of demotivated students who are there to get merely a degree. The sad part is that most of the colleges have become factories that are manufacturing similar products with no unique features.

The life of a typical college student follows the path trajectory: Joining the college with high hopes >being stuck in the rut of copying assignments>cramming for semester exams>taking stress for placements>ending up without a good and satisfying job.

In the era of google, students have become masters of ‘ctrl c + ctrl v’. We need to train them to think independently. Creative thinking is an art which can be learnt. Brainstorming ideas on different topics, mind-mapping strategies related to problem solving should be made part of the curriculum of colleges. Instilling a fearless attitude has to be inculcated in the students. When the students will become profound thinkers, we shall see more Entrepreneurs, Managers and Leaders who will transform the world.

THE SOLUTION:

The fundamental problem is that the students are only being tested and not being trained for the outside world. What we need today is a parallel education system that works on honing the essential skills of the students. A system that not only makes the students effective communicators and idea machines, but also teaches them to lead a happy, stress-free life.

When we will train our students in such a structured way, they will be polished like diamonds and there would be a multitude of organisations to hire such transformed individuals. Moreover, these students will become ‘job creators’ instead of ‘job seekers’ and would employ thousand others.

Schools and colleges should introduce such revolutionary organisations and ideas that would work on transforming the overall personality of students. The government should also try to take the bull by the horns and take such initiatives to empower the students with the right skillset.a genius becomes a genius when he is in the right environment. Personalities are not born, they are forged!
