nNEW DELHI: A 36-year-old driver working for an official in Rashtrapati Bhawan died after a tree fell on him in the President’s Estate during the dust and hail storms on Thursday, the police said on Saturday.

He succumbed to his injuries at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital on Thursday, said additional deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Deepak Yadav.

He was tested for Covid-19 while he was being treated at RML hospital. The results of the test are awaited.

A police officer said the driver, Arshad Khan, lived with his family in the servant quarters of the bungalow allotted to the Rashtrapati Bhawan official.

“Around 5.45pm, Khan was passing by the kitchen garden of the bungalow when a mango tree got uprooted because of the dust and hail storms, and fell on him,” the officer said.

Some staffers who were witness to the accident took him the RML hospital in an ambulance.

Khan is survived by his wife and two daughters — aged six and three years.

Since it was an accidental death, no police case has been registered. An autopsy on Khan’s body will be conducted after his Covid testing report is out, the officer said.
