controlled the range with her stiff jab and some nimble footwork.

When Chen did find a way in, she was met with a solid left hook to the head. But Borgohain’s best was yet to come.

In Round 2, Chen, having lost the first, grew more and more desperate with Borgohain’s control of the ring. Her attacks became more reckless and Borgohain, unfazed and perfectly poised, took full advantage. The round went unanimously in Borgohain’s favour.

Between the rounds, coach Raffaele Bergamasco, furiously fanning her with a towel, said: “The whole of India and Assam are watching. You have the opportunity to create history.”

In Round 3, still dictating the movement in the ring, still using her quick jab and hook combination, Borgohain did just that. After Vijender Singh’s in 2008 and Mary Kom’s in 2012, India will have another Olympic boxing medal.

“I have been working hard for eight years, so I thought I will have to show that hard work. I just wanted to be aggressive from the start,” said Borgohain, sporting a traditional gamosa around her neck after the fight.

Borgohain’s path to Tokyo has been hard. Last year, after almost seven months without training or competition because of the pandemic, she tested positive for Covid-19 on the day the Indian boxing squad flew out to Italy for a prolonged training and competition trip in October.

Left behind in New Delhi, Borgohain had to be hospitalised for a few days.

“She has been very strong mentally. We had to work on her strength and conditioning after Covid and it took a couple of months. She was very dedicated,” said Bergamasco.

Russia on Friday blamed a software failure for an incident that briefly knocked the International Space Station (ISS) off course and said it was pressing ahead with work to activate a newly-attached module at the centre of the episode.

The ISS was thrown off track on Thursday after the engines of

boxers trained as a team, Borgohain worked on her fitness at the Inspire Institute of Sports in Ballari, Karnataka. By the end of January she felt ready to get back into the ring, but there was bad news from home—both her mother’s kidneys were failing. In February, Borgohain made a twoday trip to Kolkata to be with her mother, who was undergoing a kidney transplant there.

In her first tournament after this period of chaos, the Boxam International invitational in Spain, she lost in the very first round. By May, the two-time world championship bronze medallist was back in the flow, winning a bronze in the Asian Championships in Doha.

Borgohain comes from Baromukhia, a village near Assam’s border with Nagaland. Her father owns a small tea plantation and she has two older sisters, Lima and Licha, (one is in the CISF the other with the BSF). Growing up, Borgohain was fascinated by Lima and Licha training in Muay Thai.

When she was old enough, Borgohain started training in the martial art too.

In 2012, Sports Authority of India boxing coach Padum Boro was scouting for new recruits because he did not have enough boxers to represent Assam in the upcoming sub-junior nationals. He saw Borgohain in action in her school. Impressed by her height and her skills, Boro convinced her to join the SAI boxing programme in Guwahati.

“I was told by the coach, just don’t use the kick, and throw as many punches as possible,” Borgohain had told HT in an earlier interview. She went on to win gold in the nationals with just a few months of training.

In her Olympic semi-final on August 4, Borgohain will run into world champion Busenaz Surmeneli, who she has never fought before. the Russian Nauka, or ‘science’, research module roared into life about three hours after it had latched on.

“Due to a short-term software failure, a direct command was mistakenly implemented to turn on the module’s engines for withdrawal, which led to some modification of the orientation of the complex as a whole,” Vladimir Solovyov, designer general at Energia, a Russian space that Kharge has mentioned that even during former vice president Hamid Ansari’s tenure as the chairman, the leader of the Opposition enjoyed freedom in speaking in the House, and no one was allowed to disrupt or stop his speeches, but that this is happening now. He has also said that opposition parties are not getting time to raise their issues.

The situation in the Rajya Sabha, where the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance is still in minority, was discussed among opposition parties in their meeting on Friday morning. According to a leader from a non-congress opposition party , the general consensus was that the Opposition was being muzzled in the Rajya Sabha.

Opposition-led protests have rocked both Houses of Parliament from the beginning of the monsoon session on July 19. The Opposition is demanding a debate on the Pegasus snooping row with either the PM or the HM participating in it. The government has, so far, not agreed to that demand.

Senior government managers are expected to meet with opposition parties in an attempt to salvage the remaining 10 days of the current session.

Another opposition leader who asked not to be named argued that no “calling attention motion” or short duration discussion was allowed in the previous two sessions and no debate under Rule 267 — or suspension of other business to take up a debate — has been allowed in this session so far.

The government functionary cited above pointed out that Naidu has consideration for the Opposition having been an opposition member of the Rajya Sabha.

“In the all-party meeting on agency company said.

The seven crew members aboard - two Russian cosmonauts, three NASA astronauts, a Japanese astronaut and a European space agency astronaut from France - were never in any immediate danger, according to Nasa.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky, who is on board, on Friday told his followers on Twitter not to worry.

July 17, Naidu urged the government to sit with opposition leaders to arrive at an agreement on legislative business and other issues. Later in the Business Advisory Committee meeting, he again urged the government to regularly consult with the Opposition on major bills and other issues to be taken up in the House.”

According to this person Naidu “was upset over media reports that the Opposition has decided not to allow the House to function during this session”. the Class 12 boards this year did so under unprecedented circumstances. The education world witnessed many changes through the year gone by. Yet, they adapted to the new normal and gave their best. Proud of them! To those who feel they could have worked harder or performed better, I want to say - learn from your experience and hold your head high. A bright and opportunity-filled future awaits you...” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet on Friday.

The number of students scoring 95% and above almost doubled to 70,004 this year from last year’s 38,686, while the number of students scoring between 90-95% marks decreased from 157,934 last year to 150,152 this year.

In region-wise performance, Trivandrum performed the best with overall pass percentage of 99.89%, followed by Delhi at 99.84%, Bengaluru at 99.83%, Chennai at 99.77%, and Bhubaneswar at 99.55%.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said it was a historic performance. “Congratulations to Delhi government schools students, teachers and parents. Congrats Team Delhi Education. Overall pass percentage is 99.96% up from 97.92% last year. 875 Schools have 100% result (396 last year) 885 students score above 95% (442 students last year) Its historic!” he tweeted.

Students were evaluated on the basis of their finals in classes 10 and 11, and their midyear tests in 12th. The final score was drawn up by their schools using a 30-30-40 formula set by the CBSE and experts said the better performance is likely to be an outcome of a more lenient approach by schools in a year when learning has been difficult.

The formula was used to decide the theory component of the finals, which accounts for 70-80% of the total score. The 30-30-40 split meant that the theory marks were 60% based on past performance. From Class 10, a student’s average score from the three best subjects was chosen. From Class 11, the score of the final exam for that subject was taken into account. And from Class 12, the marks were calculated on the basis of their unit-tests, midterms or pre-boards.

Several principals said that the 60% weight to previous years’ scores led to a jump in pass percentage across states this year.

Malini Narayanan, principal of Army Public School in Shankar Vihar and chairperson of National Progressive, said: “Due to the moderation policy, children who may have scored below the passing limit of 33 marks may have been granted 34 or 35 marks. Only 40% weightage was given for Class 12 scores so there is no way children could have failed, because students score well in Class 10 board exams and keeping pandemic in mind they were promoted in Class 11 as well.”

Narayanan added that while schools would have had some students in previous years who failed to clear some subjects, administrators “would have done positive moderation in the interest of the students”.

Out of 3,925 children with special needs, 3,909 passed. Like in previous years, more girls passed the finals than boys but the difference in their pass percentage shrank from 6 last year to 0.54. The pass percentage of transgender students was recorded at 100% -from last year’s 66.67%.

Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) and Central Tibetan School Administration (CTSA) schools performed the best with 100% pass percentage following by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JKV), which had 99.94% pass percentage.

Divya Bhatia, principal of Amity International School in Saket, said, “It has been an extremely tough year for everyone and I am sure getting the results has brought on a sigh of relief for all parents and students. By and large the results appear to be as per expectations. However, in case a child is unhappy with the marks in any of the subjects, CBSE has the option for them to appear for the board in the month of August.”

Board officials said they would conduct Class 12 exams between August 16 and September 15. “Students who are not satisfied with their assessment done based on the policy, private and patrachar candidates, those registered for improving their papers, and first chance compartment candidates will be allowed to appear for these exams,” Bhardwaj said.

Only 6,149 students have been placed under compartment as against 87,651 students last year. do without masks and issued a new recommendation calling for the use of face coverings in certain high-risk conditions earlier this week.

The United States is witnessing a surge in new infections, with about 70,000 every day (seven-day average).

And the CDC believes vaccinated people are also spreading the virus, although at a far lesser intensity than those unvaccinated.

The data shows there are roughly 35,000 symptomatic infections per week among 162 million vaccinated Americans, the New York Times reported on the basis of the CDC document.

The internal document recommends vaccinated people with weak immune systems must wear masks even in lowrisk conditions and so should vaccinated people who come in contact with children or older adults, according to the NYT report.

But the current masking guidance is unlikely to be enough and the CDC report said, “Given higher transmissibility and current vaccine coverage, universal masking is essential.”

Experts also said the new insights about the variant underscore the need for possible change in vaccination policies, including by considering a third dose for those who are typically vulnerable to Covid-19.

“Based on the internal CDC document released (leaked) last night, it’s possible we’ll accelerate towards a third MRNA immunization - certainly for those on immunosuppressive Rx (medicines) and older groups - but also possibly universal for those eligible, that + universal masks,” wrote Peter Hotez, molecular virology specialist at Baylor College of Medicine.
