Russia says Israel backs neo-nazis in row over Ukraine

MOSCOW: The Russian foreign ministry on Tuesday said Israel supports neo-nazis in Ukraine, escalating a row that began when foreign minister Sergei Lavrov claimed Adolf Hitler had Jewish origins. Israel said on Monday Lavrov’s comment was an “unfor -givable” falsehood that tried to minimise the horrors of the Holocaust - the slaughter of 6mn Jews and other minority groups by Nazis Germa -ny. Moscow reiterated Lavrov’s point that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s Jewish origins did not preclude the country from being run by neonazis.

At least two dead in central China building collapse BEIJING: At least two people have died in a building that collapsed in central China, state media said on Tuesday, the first deaths reported four days into a rescue operation searching for dozens still missing. The commercial building in Changsha city, Hunan province - which housed apartments, a hotel and a cinema - caved in on Friday, sparking a massive response with hundreds of emergency workers. Earlier in the day, emergency workers had pulled out a woman alive from the flattened structure. At least 14 people are still known to be trapped in the rubble while no contact has been establishe­d with 39 others missing.

Suu Kyi charged with bribery as new trial opens BANGKOK: Ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi went on trial Monday in a new corruption case against her, alleging she took $550,000 in bribes from a constructi­on magnate. She is charged with two counts under the Anticorrup­tion Act, with each count punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine. Suu Kyi has been detained since the army ousted her elected government in February 2021 and has not been seen or allowed to speak in public since then.
