GURUGRAM: A 32-year-old man, who allegedly beat a woman friend to death in Faridabad on Wednesday, died by suicide at the local court on Friday when he was produced before the magistrate following his arrest.

The police said that a Faridabad magistrate was hearing the case when the suspect, Mahender, pushed aside officers and advocates, ran to the balcony and jumped to his death from the sixth floor of the courthouse.

Narender Kadiyan, deputy commissioner of police (NIT), said the woman, identified as 19-year-old Roshni, who goes by a single name, was found severely wounded along the side of a road in Faridabad’s Mujesar neighbourhood early on Thursday morning.

She had several injuries and multiple fractures to her arms and legs. “The woman died during treatment on Thursday evening and a murder case was registered against the suspect,” he said.

Roshni told her brother that Mahender assaulted her and left her for dead on the side of the road, leading the police to arrest him.

According to the victim’s brother Kishan, Roshni left for work on Wednesday morning but did not return home, following which members of her family called her multiple times.

“We called her more than 30 times. Later, her phone was switched off. This never happened before and we got worried; but we thought she must have gone to a friend’s house and would return in the morning,” he said.

Around 5am Thursday, Kishan received a call from a person who said that Roshni was injured on the roadside and unable to talk.

“When I reached the spot, she narrated her ordeal and told me that Mahender assaulted her with rods and stones,” he said.

Kishan said that Mahender was married and had two children. His wife and children lived in a village in Uttar Pra

2.30am: desh and the couple was going through a divorce, he said.

Based on his statement, police registered a case of murder against Mahender and formed five teams to nab him. Kadiyan said Mahender was arrested from Ballabhgarh bus stand on Friday.

According to the police, Mahender suspected that Roshni was involved with another man. He decided to kill her when she refused to stop speaking to this man, added the police.

In custody, Mahender admitted to killing the woman, beating her and smashing her head with a stone, said the police.

Police said Mahender and Roshni met three years ago while working together in a private company.

“He wanted to marry Roshni, but had to wait, because his divorce was not finalised,” said Kadiyan.

The DCP said during questioning, Mahender revealed that he smashed her mobile phone, hoping it would erase call details and history.

“He was spotted with the victim on CCTV camera footage. To ensure that neighbours don’t report the matter to police, he took her to an isolated spot and assaulted her with iron rods and stones. He hit her on the head with stones and dumped her on the roadside, assuming she was dead,” he said.

He was produced before a magistrate in a room on the sixth floor of a Faridabad court on Friday.

“When police teams produced him before the magistrate and were narrating the incident, he pushed them aside and ran towards the balcony and jumped off the sixth floor of the courthouse. He died on the spot and doctors declared him dead on arrival at the hospital,” he said.

The police said that they initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC), and a probe is underway.
