RECORD SEIZURES MADE IN ELECTIONS IN GUJ, HIMACHAL, SAYS POLL PANEL

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) has made “record seizures” of cash, liquor and freebies ahead of elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, the poll body said in a statement on Friday.

While the seizures in Gujarat amounted to ₹71.88 crores, in Himachal Pradesh, they amounted to ₹50.28 crores, it said.

In its statement, the EC said Gujarat witnessed seizures of ₹71.88 crore in just a few days after the announceme­nt of the election, which surpassed the seizures made during the entire duration of the enforcemen­t of the Model Code of Conduct during the 2017 assembly polls, which amounted to ₹27.21 crore.

“...the seizures in Himachal Pradesh are also significan­t amounting to ₹50.28 crores as compared to ₹9.03 crores, marking more than five-fold increase,” it said.
