HOW TECH IS SHAPING DEMOCRACIES
Elections around the world, but especially in the United States (US), have brought to the fore the myriad ways in which digital technologies are shaping our democracies. The recently concluded midterm elections in the US were dominated by conversations around conspiracy theories, Right and Left echo chambers on social media, and the increasing impact of internet behemoths in national affairs and elections.
This week, we recommend The Digital Republic: On Freedom and Democracy in the 21st Century by James Susskind, who argues that many of the problems we see today are the result of inadequate or compromised regulation and offers a bold new vision for the digital age that includes realising algorithmic transparency and an independent framework for moderation and oversight.
