Thankful to people of Tamil Nadu: Rajiv case convict Nalini

CHENNAI: Nalini Sriharan and other people convicted for their role in the assassinat­ion of former PM Rajiv Gandhi walked out of the Tamil Nadu prisons on Saturday following an order from the Supreme Court on Friday, freeing all six, including Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandr­an.

After coming out of the Vellore Jail, Nalini told news agency ANI, “I am thankful to the people of Tamil Nadu who supported me for the last 32 years... I thank both the State and Union government­s (for her release).”

Nalini had reportedly taken suicide bomber Dhanu to a shop for stitching the salwar kameez that was used for concealing the IED used for the assassinat­ion. Fifteen others, including nine policemen, were also killed in the attack while 43 were injured.

The Supreme Court on Friday set free Nalini and other convicts, who were serving life term, in the Rajiv Gandhi case, noting that its earlier order releasing another convict A G Perarivala­n was equally applicable to them Nalini had taken suicide bomber Dhanu to a shop for stitching the salwar kameez that was used for concealing the IED used for the assassinat­ion.
