CONGRESS LIST INCLUDES HOST OF FORMER COUNCILLOR­S, CIVIC VETERANS

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) on Sunday released the list of 250 party candidates who will be contesting in the upcoming civic elections scheduled to be held on December 4. The party said that candidates will contesting with the slogan “Meri Chamakti Dilli”. “We have released the list of MCD election candidates. With resolve of Meri Chamakti

Dilli, they will participat­e in this festival of democracy,” the party said.

DPCC chief Anil Kumar took to social media site Twitter to release the list of candidates.

The list of candidates features several veteran former councillor­s, including former Delhi mayor Farhad Suri who will be contesting from Daryaganj ward. Suri was MCD mayor in 2006 and represente­d the Daryganj ward in South MCD till 2017. The party has also fielded Varyam Kaur, a veteran East Delhi councillor. Kaur was the leader of opposition in East MCD in 2012 and will now be contesting from Azad Nagar ward. Some of the other repeat candidates include Seema Tahira contesting from Bazar Sitaram, former councillor from Kalkaji Narinder Kaur Captain, former councillor Darshana who will be contesting once again from Siddharth Nagar, former councillor Prerna Singh, who was elected in 2017 from Anand Parbat ward and will now be contesting from Kishanganj as Anand Parbat ward has been removed in the delimitati­on exercise, which saw the reduction of the number of municipal wards from 272 to 250. Congress had last won the Delhi municipal elections in 2002 and has been sitting in opposition benches from 2007. To be sure, several key Congress councillor­s have switched over to Aam Aadmi Party over the last one year. These include former standing committee chairman Mukesh Goel from Adarsh Nagar, Guddi Devi from Malkaganj, Aale Iqbal from Delhi Gate area and Bahan Preeti from Dilshad Colony.
