KOLKATA: West Bengal BJP MP Locket Chatterjee on Sunday filed a police complaint against state minister Akhil Giri over his recent remarks on President Droupadi Murmu and sought a statement from chief minister Mamata Banerjee on the matter.

Giri on Saturday apologised after a 17-second video clip of him commenting on the “looks of the President” went viral.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Chatterjee said: “Till now, Mamata has not issued any statement despite she being a woman and her party leader insulting a tribal woman who is sitting on the highest chair of our country. She should immediately issue a statement.” “Had it been an incident involving a woman in Uttar pradesh, she would have sent a team of MPS and intellectuals would have staged a candle march.”

She said she filed a complaint with North Avenue police station under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and Indian Penal Code. “The TMC has already condemned Giri’s remarks and said it does not endorse such statements,” state women and child development minister Shashi Panja said.
