Revamp to end this month: LG office
NEW DELHI: The revamp of a key arterial stretch linking the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and Dhaula Kuan will be completed by the end of this month, said officials aware of the matter, a vital project ahead of the meetings related to next year’s G20 Summit.
The upgrade plan for the 8km stretch, said officials from the lieutenant governor’s (LG) office, includes landscaping work, infrastructure upgrades, improved horticulture, as well as the installation of eight lion statues and fountains.
“Of the eight statues, six made of white marble are six feet high and weigh two tonnes each, and two black stone ones are 13 feet high and weigh 14 tonnes,” the official said.
“The fountains will come up at the crossing from Aerocity towards Terminal 3 terminal and at junctions near T1, T3, Dwarka among others,” added the official.
India will assume the presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) large economies from December this year and host the summit of leaders at Pragati Maidan in Delhi on September 9 and 10 next year.
The New Delhi area will play host to many of the meetings and transit by the delegates in the run-up to the summit. Officials of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) said around 190 meetings are likely to be held and 12,000 delegates expected to visit the area during the country’s presidency.
The revamp is being executed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and NDMC, with the LG’S office coordinating the project.
“Various private firms have also chipped in with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds,” said an official from the LG’S office.
“Work completed so far includes covering open drains, repairing pavements and central verges, planting 30,000 seasonal flowering plants, painting flyovers in a new red-white colour, replacing the black-white,” said the official.
