Forest officials track three young cubs of dead tigress
Days after a tigress was found dead in a field in Antharasanthe forest range in Karnataka’s Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, forest department officials were able to locate its three cubs aged around 10-11 months old. A massive search involving over 150 forest department officials was launched on Saturday fearing that the cubs may not survive without their mother for long. On Saturday, officials had found the decomposed carcass of a tigress – popularly known as ‘Nyangachchikatte Female’ — aged 12-13 years. Officials said they were aware that she had given birth to cubs a few months ago, and that they were concerns as the cubs may not able to hunt independently. Officials had installed dozens of cameras across the reserve to look for the cubs, Nagarhole wildlife sanctuary director Harsha said. “On Wednesday one of the cameras recorded them,” he said, adding they are awaiting a decision on whether they should track the cubs physically to rehabilitate them.
