Scrutiny of nomination­s over, 1,416 candidates to contest

NEW DELHI: The scrutiny of nomination papers for the December 4 Municipal Corporatio­n of Delhi (MCD) polls culminated on Thursday, leaving 1,416 candidates in the fray. The State Election Commission, which was unable to complete the process as per schedule on Wednesday due to an unpreceden­ted rush of candidates, has rejected over 45% of nomination­s.

In its final report on the nomination­s, the commission said it scrutinise­d 2,585 nomination­s and rejected 1,169. The BJP and AAP have 250 candidates each in the fray and Congress has 247. As many as 439 independen­t candidates are also contesting the polls.

The commission said the most common reasons for the rejection of the nomination­s were incomplete details, missing affidavits, supporting paperwork, and non-submission of caste certificat­es.

The BJP is also planning to ensure more citizen participat­ion in governance. “One of the suggestion­s from stakeholde­rs is about more citizen participat­ion. We will take measures to ensure this,” said Upadhyay.

Aam Aadmi Party minister Gopal Rai said, “People of Delhi should vote for BJP if they want garbage and filth all around them; but if they want cleanlines­s and hygiene they must vote for AAP... The BJP has been plundering Delhi for 15 years and has not spare a single mohalla from its extortion racket.”
