LG NOD TO APPEAL SC’S ACQUITTAL OF CHHAWLA RAPE, MURDER ACCUSED

NEW DELHI: Delhi lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has given his approval for a review petition against the Supreme Court decision to acquit three men sentenced to death for the 2012 gang rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman in Delhi’s Chhawla, officials said on Monday.

The alleged accused were convicted and awarded the death sentence by a city court on February 19, 2014, which was upheld by the high court on August 26, 2014. However, on November 8, Supreme Court acquitted them, citing glaring lapses in the case’s investigation and trial, leading to serious doubts in the minds of the top court judges.
