NEW DELHI: There was nothing to separate Uruguay and South Korea at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan on Thursday as their Group H clash ended in a goalless draw. That Uruguay had only one shot on target while South Korea managed none was reflective of both teams lacking the end product to nudge ahead.

The best chances came in the opening period. In the 34th minute, South Korea’s Hwang Ui-jo found no Uruguayan player in his vicinity inside the box while receiving a cross from right-back Kim Moon-hwan. But he ended up sending his shot high.

Centre-back Diego Godin came the closest. Just as the half-time break was approaching, Godin rose over his marker and met a corner from Federico Valverde with a superb header that hit the post. Valverde also hit the post late in the game with a long-ranger.

The Koreans, meanwhile, sent in a flurry of crosses into the box, but nobody got on the end of them. There was anticipation whenever Son Heung-min touched the ball, but a couple of threatening counterattacks were adeptly handled by the Uruguayan defence.
