DMK WORKER SETS HIMSELF ON FIRE AGAINST ‘HINDI IMPOSITION’: COPS
COIMBATORE: A senior DMK cadre on Saturday died of selfimmolation near the party office i n Thazhaiyur, near Mettur in nearby Salem district in Tamil Nadu.
The man took the step to show his protest against ‘Hindi imposition’, police said.
The 85-year-old deceased, a former DMK farmers’ wing functionary, raised slogans against ‘Hindi imposition’, allegedly poured kerosene on his body and set himself on fire with the help of a matchstick. Though party workers and the public tried to save him, he died on the spot, they said.
Police recovered a paper addressing the central government, which read, “there is no need for imposing Hindi when Tamil language is here.”
Chief minister M K Stalin said he was saddened by the “tragic demise” of the cadre.
