A wanted gangster, who had been absconding since 2014, was killed and four members of Lucknow’s Thakurganj police team were injured when their vehicle met with an accident near Guna in Madhya Pradesh, about 500 kilometres from here, on Sunday evening, the police said on Monday.

The accident took place when the police team was bringing the gangster to Lucknow from Mumbai by road. The vehicle overturned when the driver tried to avoid a bluebull, the police added. The injured police personnel were rushed to hospital and their condition remained critical.

Confirming the accident, Lucknow commissioner of police Sujeet Pandey said, “A team of the Thakurganj police station that was sent to Mumbai by road to bring back a wanted gangster met with an accident at around 7pm on Sunday. The gangster, Firoz alias Shami, 60, was killed in the accident while the members of the police team, including a sub-inspector (S-I), suffered injuries and are in hospital.”

The commissioner has sent another team to Guna take stock of the condition of the injured police team members. A family member of Shami was also sent along with the police team from Lucknow to identify the body.

Shami, a resident of Bahraich, had six cases lodged against him at the Thakurganj police station. Three of the cases were of loot, two of theft while one case was filed under the Gangsters Act. Shami was absconding since 2014.

“Last week, we received an intelligence input that Shami was living in Mumbai. So, a team from the Thakurganj police station was sent there on September 25. The team arrested him with the help of the Mumbai police and was bringing him back when the accident occurred,” Pandey said.

A local court had already issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Shami. The police team was supposed to present Shami in court.

In a similar incident in July, a police car, in which gangster Vikas Dubey was being brought back to Kanpur after his arrest in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, skidded off the road.
