SGPGI cures 90% Covid positive kidney transplant patients
Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) has cured about 90% of kidney transplant patients, about 72 in number, who got infected with the deadly coronavirus, a senior expert of the premier institute said.
Besides, SGPGI experts also cured 92% coronavirus patients, more than 150 in number, who were suffering from renal infections, cardiac problems and diabetes. Professor Narayan Prasad, head of the department nephrology, said, “PGI has come up with its own way to deal with such patients. At PGI, we have treated around 80 kidney transplant patients who contracted the coronavirus infection and we were able to save the lives of 90% of them. Because transplant recipients take immunosuppressive drugs, they have a higher risk of infection from viruses. To lower the chance of getting the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, transplant patients must remain cautious and not move out, unless necessary. It is said that transplant patients, whose immune system is low, are more susceptible to infection.”
“We have saved the lives of 92% coronavirus patients who were undergoing dialysis earlier. For such patients, PGI has installed 12 dialysis machines at Rajdhani Covid hospital, where such patients undergo dialysis,” he said. “Normally, in our general wards, we are doing more than 100 dialysis per day. But sometimes some asymptomatic patients do come to us. That’s why it’s mandatory to get the coronavirus test done before any dialysis.”
He also said, “The mortality rate of kidney patients infected by the coronavirus is much lower at SGPGI due to the specific regimen of medicines.”
