PGI DOCTORS DEVISE NEW TECHNIQUE TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL

- Anupam Srivastava anupam.srivastava@htlive.com : letters@htlive.com :

Doctors at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) have invented a new technique to lower cholesterol in humans.

Assistant professor Dr Rohit A Sinha and PhD scholar Sangam Rajak, of the department of endocrinology, in collaboration with researchers from Italy and Singapore, found that a gene known as ULK1 was shown to regulate liver cholesterol production.

They showed that drugbased inhibition of ULK1 significantly reduces the biosynthesis of cholesterol producing enzymes, leading to the lowering of cholesterol levels in human hepatic cells and mouse models.

The identification of ULK1 gene as regulator of human cholesterol synthesis was made possible by an unbiased next generation sequencing methodology, which discovered that liver cells lacking ULK1 protein had deficient cholesterol synthesis.

Dr Sinha said, “Cholesterol is known to play a major role in human health. Hypercholesterolemia or increase in blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for development of several diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, stroke and even more recent Covid-19 pathogenesis. Cardiovascular diseases are the major killers in most developed countries, including India, where they result in around 30 per cent of all adult deaths. We can control cholesterol related deaths with the help of this discovery.”
