PRAYAGRAJ: In a bid to bridge the gap between the cops and the common people, senior police officials are giving soft skill training to police station and beat level policemen.

Through powerpoint presentations cops are being trained in ways to interact with the common man and help implement law without abrasive and rough behaviour. The initiative has been taken by SSP Sarvshrestha Tripathi and is being headed under Circle Officer Bairana Amita Singh. Posters containing all do’s and don’ts along with instructions on how to give response to complainants when they approach police stations are being circulated in WhatsApp groups of cops. All SHOs had been asked to take meeting of their subordinates and convey the instructions issued by the senior officials regarding how to deal with complainants, especially women. The posters say that cops should not be prejudiced and listen to the problem of people with patience while encouraging them to feel free to narrate their woes.

Every complainant should be treated with respect and should be given a seat to make them comfortable. Women cops should be deployed to deal with women complainants. SHOs should ensure clean drinking water and sanitary conditions at police stations. Complainants should not be asked questions which make them feel uncomfortable or ashamed and language used by cops towards them should be respectful and soft. Legal process should be adopted for disposal of complaints. The accused should not be subjected to misbehaviour.

Policemen should adopt diplomacy and display professionalism while disposing of complaints and refrain from being intimate with the complainants or take any advantage from them. SSP Sarvshrestha Tripathi said cops are being sensitized through different means.
