In a tweet on Friday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi targeted the Yogi government for sending farmers to jail for burning stubble in Saharanpur.

Gandhi questioned: “Are only farmers responsible for pollution? When will action be initiated against those who are actually responsible?”

She also thanked local Congress leaders of Saharanpur for raising the issue and ensuring release of six arrested farmers.

Congress district president in Saharanpur Ch Muzaffar Ali Gujar and party MLAs Naresh Saini and Masood Akhtar called on the district magistrate on Wednesday to raise the issue of arrest of six farmers. Gujar said that DM Akhilesh Singh gave them a patient hearing and directed the city magistrate to ensure release of all farmers immediately. The farmers were released on Wednesday after spending a day in jail.

One of the arrested farmers, Pradyuman Kumar of Topri village said that he and his brother Dushyant were booked even after paying penalties of Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000.

Sub divisional magistrate ( SDM) of Nakud Himanshu Nagpal clarified that cases were generally registered against repeated offenders, otherwise farmers were slapped with penalties.

But farmers’ organizations are not convinced by the plea of officials. Ch Diwakar, national vice president of BKU ( Bhanu), questioned: “Are only farmers responsible for pollution? What about industries billowing hazardous gases and polluting underground water?”

Expediting its probe, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to question two senior police and administrative officers, including former Hathras superintendent of police (SP) Vikrant Vir, in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder

A couple from Deoria was working as principals of two different government primary schools in Sitapur by getting jobs using forged educational certificates of different people for past 11 years, said UP Special Task Force (STF) officials on Friday.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP) of STF Satya Sen said the couple was identified as Rishikesh Mani Tripathi, who is posted as principal at Parvatpur primary school in Sitapur and Sneh Lata Tiwari, who is posted as principal at Hariharpur primary school in Sitapur. He said Rishikesh has been arrested after registering an FIR in the matter and efforts are on to arrest his wife.

He said Rishikesh got the job using educational certificates of one Bajrang Bhushan, who is presently working as assistant professor in Dayalbagh Educational Institute in Agra. He said Sneh Lata, however, got the job using certificates of one Swati Tiwari, who is presently working as assistant teacher in Girls’ Primary School in Gorakhpur.

Interestingly, Sneh Lata is third women to be arrested for using Swati Tiwari’s certificates to get the primary school teacher jobs. Before, two primary school teachers, who got job using Swati Tiwari’s documents, were arrested from Deoria and Barabanki districts.
