The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) plan to field new candidates on the majority of seats in the 2022 assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh has led to disconcertment among the party’s sitting MLAs. The legislators whose ticket is doubtful are up in arms against the party leadership and are flocking to the Samajwadi Party and the Congress in search of greener pastures.

Although a-year-and-a-half is still left for the poll, BSP chief Mayawati has started preparations for the crucial election to regain the lost ground. After revamping the party organisation, she has started screening candidates for the assembly election. She is also collecting feedback about the performance of the 18 sitting MLAs. Those on a weak wicket have been told that they will not get the ticket in 2022. After revolting against the party leadership on October 28, seven MLAs Chaudhary Aslam Ali, Hakim Lal Bind, Mohammad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Aslam Raini, Sushma Patel, Hargovind Bhargava and Bandana Singh said the party coordinators had already told them that they will not be repeated in the 2022 assembly polls.

“We have been humiliated and left with little option. So, we opposed the nomination of party candidate Ramji Gautam for Rajya Sabha to avenge the humiliation we suffered. We met SP leaders in the hope of getting tickets in the next UP assembly

Aslam Raini, Hargovind Bhargava and Hakim Lal Bind said, “The party coordinators are holding meetings in our constituencies. We are not called in the meetings but the probable candidates are introduced to the party cadre. It’s a big humiliation. We are sitting MLAs. The people will mock at us.”

“Over a year is left in the assembly election. What ground for the denial of ticket is and what report coordinators have given to ‘Behanji’ (Mayawati) is not known to us,” the trio added.

A senior BSP leader said after Bihar election, the party will start preparation for the 2022 UP election.

Mayawati has formed the Grand United Secular Front (GUSF) for Bihar election by stitching an alliance with Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Samajwadi Janata Dal Democratic (SJDD), Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and Janvadi Party Socialist (JPS).

As some of the parties in the alliance have base in Uttar Pradesh, the alliance may be activated here too. The members of the alliance will hold a meeting after the Bihar election to decide their future strategy.

“Fearing that new alliance might damage their prospects, the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and BJP have launched attack on the BSP,” the BSP leader said.

Shaukat Ali, Uttar Pradesh unit president of AIMIM, said the GUSF should contest election in UP too to stop BJP from returning to power.

“The alliance partners— the BSP, the AIMIM and the SBSP will mobilise their resources to come to power in Uttar Pradesh in the 2022 assembly election,” he said. SBSP chief and former UP minister Om Prakash Rajbhar said, “The GUSF has been launched for the Bihar assembly election. After the Bihar election, the leaders of the alliance partners will hold a meeting to decide on the future strategy about launching the alliance in Uttar Pradesh assembly election as well.”
