India records over 44K new Covid cases, tally past 8.6mn

While the fatality rate stands at 1.48%, the recovery rate has risen to 92.79%

India’s coronaviru­s disease (Covid-19) caseload went past 8.6 million on Wednesday, while the number of people who have recuperate­d from the disease surged to 8.13 million, pushing the national recovery rate to 92.79% according to the Union health ministry’s data.

With 44,281 more people testing positive for coronaviru­s in a span of 24 hours, the infection tally mounted to 86,36, 011, while the death toll rose to 1,27,571 after 512 new fatalities were reported, the data updated at 8 am showed.

At present, there are 4,94,657 active cases in the country which comprise 5.73 % of the total caseload, the data stated.

The total recoveries have surged to 80,13,783, pushing the national recovery rate to 92.79% , while Covid-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.48%.

India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 2 million mark on August 7, 3 million on August 23 and 4 million on September 5. It went past 5 million on September 16, 6 million on September 28, 7 million on October 11 and crossed 8 million on October 29. According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 12,07,69,151 samples have been tested so far with 11,53,294 samples being tested on Tuesday. The 512 new fatalities include 110 from Maharashtr­a, 83 from Delhi, 53 from West Bengal, 30 from Uttar Pradesh, 28 from Kerala, 25 from Tamil Nadu, 20 each from Karnataka and Punjab.

by 11,430 from Karnataka, 11,387 from Tamil Nadu, 7,403 from West Bengal, 7,261 from Uttar Pradesh, 7,143 from Delhi, 6,814 from Andhra Pradesh, 4,358 from Punjab and 3,770 from Gujarat.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70% of the deaths occurred due to comorbidit­ies. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical

Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that statewise distributi­on of figures is subject to further verificati­on and reconcilia­tion. Meanwhile, the Covid-19 active caseload in India has fallen below the 0.5 million-mark for the first time after 106 days and comprises merely 5.73% of the total cases, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday.

Seventy per cent of the 44,281 new coronaviru­s infections reported in a span of 24 hours are from 10 states and UTs with Delhi continuing to report the highest daily new cases at 7,830. It is followed by Kerala with 6,010 cases, the ministry said.

This landmark achievemen­t has been made possible by the Centre’s sustained, graded and targeted strategies, their effective implementa­tion by states and UTs, dedicated and selfless service of doctors and all other Covid-19 warriors, it said.

Twenty-seven states and Union territorie­s have less than 20,000 active cases, the ministry highlighte­d.

In another milestone, India has carried out over 12 crore cumulative tests with 11,53,294 tests being conducted in a span of 24 hours.

The trend of daily low cases has been made possible by an exponentia­l increase in the testing infrastruc­ture. The ministry said that 77% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrat­ed in 10 states and UTs.

Maharashtr­a has reported the maximum number of single-day recoveries with 6,718 newly recovered cases closely followed by the 6,698 figure achieved by Kerala. They are followed by 6,157 recoveries in Delhi.
