Sangam city markets witness brisk sale

With residents of Sangam city going all out to make preparatio­ns for Diwali, almost all key markets witnessed brisk sale of special items associated with the festival all through the day on Friday.

From fancy crackers, designer diyas to mouth-watering delicacies locals had a lot of options to spoil themselves.

Although most of the sweets shops are selling traditiona­l sweets, some of the old and eminent sweets shops of the old city area have come up with a novel idea of ‘Diwali Deepak’.

Made with anjir (figs), this sweet has been given the shape of a ‘diya’ (earthen lamp). To make it more realistic, it has been coloured earthen brown (the traditiona­l colour) and also has a beautiful wick made of khoya.

Likewise, bakeries have also come up with number of items, especially designed for making the Diwali special. There were pastry in shape of crackers, bombs etc which are selling like hot cakes. The bakeries have also got the order of special cakes which has the designs of items of crackers. “Every year we get orders for specially designed pastry and cakes which look like real crackers,” said Mohit, owner of one of the bakeries of the city adding that festival has given a much-needed boost to the business which had been badly affected by the pandemic.

Apart from these, several shops were seen selling specially made gift items. These gift packs were made and priced keeping in mind every section of customers. From biscuits to chocolates, dry fruits and even fruit juices, these gift packs had the combo pack of all.

Till late night, people were seen buying gifts for their near and dear ones.

“As we all are very careful in the present corona crisis, all the families residing in my apartment have decided to celebrate the festival keeping the Covid protocol in mind. There would be crackers which produce minimal smoke and the main thrust would be on sweets,” said Arti Srivastava, a student residing in Civil Lines.
