Covid-19 cases in India breach 9-million mark

Total recoveries surge to 8.4 million pushing the national recovery rate to 93.6 per cent, govt data showed

NEW DELHI: India’s Covid-19 caseload surpassed the 9-million mark on Friday with 45,882 new cases, while the recoveries surged to 8.4 million pushing the national recovery rate to 93.6 per cent, according to the Union health ministry data.

The total coronaviru­s cases mounted to 9,004,365 and the death toll climbed to 132,162 with the coronaviru­s disease claiming 584 lives in a span of 24 hours in the country, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The Covid-19 case fatality rate has further declined to 1.46 per cent. There are 443,794 active cases of coronaviru­s infection in the country which comprises 4.92 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 129,591,786 samples have been tested up to November 20 with 1,083,397 samples being tested on Thursday. India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 2-million mark on August 7, 3-million on August 23 and 4-million on September 5. It went past 5-million on September 16, 6-million on September 28, 7-million on October 11 and crossed 8-million on October 29.

The 584 new fatalities include 154 from Maharashtr­a, 98 from Delhi, 53 from West Bengal, 39 from Uttar Pradesh, 26 each from Kerala, Chhattisga­rh and Karnataka, 20 from Haryana, 19 from Tamil Nadu and 15 from Punjab.

A total of 132,162 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 46,356 from Maharashtr­a followed by 11,604 from Karnataka, 11,550 from Tamil Nadu, 8,041 from Delhi, 7,873 from West Bengal, 7,480 from Uttar Pradesh, 6,910 from Andhra Pradesh, 4,556 from Punjab and 3,830 from Gujarat.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidit­ies.

“Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distributi­on of figures is subject to further verificati­on and reconcilia­tion.
