LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Lucknow University should think of a road map of what it can provide to the nation when India completes 100 years of independence in 2047.

He made the comment during his address, via video link, at LU’s foundation day event held as part of the ongoing centennial year celebrations of the university.

“It is a proud moment for all of us that Lucknow University has competed its 100 years. I want this occasion to be used as a platform for planning the next 27 years when India will complete 100 years of Independence. The university must think how it can contribute to the nation by 2047,” Modi said.

Defence minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh, along with chief minister Yogi Adityanath,

also joined the function through virtual medium.

The prime minister urged the university to work on promoting the unique products of districts in UP.

“The unique products of UP districts should be made the subject of research for students. The university must work on promoting the products and advertising them to realise the aim of the one district one product (ODOP scheme),” the PM said. He mentioned chikankari of Lucknow, lock making in Aligarh and the carpets of Bhadohi district.

The state government had launched the ODOP scheme in January 2018, identifying 75 products in as many districts that are indigenous and have made the respective districts famous.

Modi released a commemorative postal stamp, a postal cover and coin on the occasion. He said that Lucknow University had made a name for itself by producing students who had contributed greatly in nationbuilding.

He mentioned a banyan tree near the administrative block, which is believed to have been planted a few years before the university was set up. Modi also referred to campus life and its own way of nurturing young minds.

Terming the New Education Policy-2020 (NEP 2020) a game changer that will promote broad thinking, the prime minister asked students and faculty members to discuss NEP 2020 so that it could be implemented in the best possible way in the coming years.

Vice chancellor Alok Kumar Rai welcomed the PM and informed him about the recent works done for the betterment of the university. Deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma participated in the event in person.
