Heavy rain lashes TN, Puducherry as cyclone Burevi nears
NEW DELHI/CHENNAI: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry starting from Wednesday night, with cyclonic storm Burevi set to cross the south Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Kanyakumari, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday.
Burevi would move nearly westwards across Pamban area and it would then move westsouthwestwards and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Kanyakumari on Thursday night and Friday early morning as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 gusting to 90 kmph, the IMD said in its bulletin.
Cyclone Burevi may make its landfall in Kerala on Friday and issued a red alert and cyclone warning for south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala coasts.
Under the influence of the weather system, regions including those falling under the Cauvery delta zone in Tamil Nadu like Kodavasal in Tiruvarur district, Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Karaikal, Tiruthuraipoondi and Mudukulatur in Ramanathapuram received rainfall between 9 cm and a maximum of 20 cm since Wednesday night and till Thursday morning.
Heavy to very heavy rainfalls are expected over south Tamil
Nadu (Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Theni, Madurai and Sivagangai districts) and south Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Alappuzah) on Thursday night. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala on Friday morning.
Sea condition will be rough to very rough over LakshadweepMaldives area and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea from Thursday to Saturday. The IMD said that damage is expected over south Tamil Nadu and Kerala’s Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzah. These damages include damage to thatched huts, power and communication lines, paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards, among others.
Following the suspension of fishing operation during December 3 and 5 over various areas in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, fishermen were advised not to venture into southwest Bay of Bengal and along and off east Sri Lanka coast on December 3 and over Lakshadweep-Maldives adjoining the southeast Arabian Sea from December 3 to 5.
Meanwhile, Union home minister Amit Shah said the Narendra Modi government is committed to provide all possible help to the people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the wake of Burevi’s impending landfall along the southern coast.
