‘NEP will help persons with disability become self-reliant’

LUCKNOW : Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said that the new education policy (NEP) would help persons with disability become self reliant (atmanirbha­r) as it never discrimina­tes students on the basis of their disabiliti­es.

“It incorporat­es traditiona­l knowledge, modern innovation and start-up culture. It mandates special opportunit­ies for persons with disability. The government is making all possible efforts in the interest of Divyang people to make their life happy,” he said praising the New Education Policy 2020 while speaking at the seventh convocatio­n of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilita­tion University (Dsmnru).

The chief minister thanked Prime minister Narendra Modi for coining the term ‘Divyang’ for persons with disability (PwD) as he realised there’s some divine power among differentl­yabled people.

Yogi also showered praise on Dr Shakuntala Misra’s granddaugh­ter Shyamalee Misra for being the first student of this varsity to get a PhD degree. She did her research on ‘law as an instrument of social transforma­tion’ with special reference to the situation of women in India.

“The government has distribute­d pension to 10.68 lakh persons with disability (PwD) during Covid period. In addition to that, the department of empowermen­t for persons with disability has distribute­d tricycles and other equipment to ease the problem of such people,” he said.

Governor Anandiben Patel also praised NEP 2020, saying: “The 10+2 structure in school education will be modified with a new pedagogica­l and curricular restructur­ing of 5+3+3+4 covering ages 3-18. There will be multiple entry and exit options for those who wish to leave the course in the middle.”

On the occasion, chief minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurate­d a post office and a postal stamp to mark 11 years of the university.

Chief guest Vishwanath Prasad Tewari, former chairman of Sahitya Akademi, in his convocatio­n address, asked students to live up to the degree they had received.
