Lucknow shivers at 4.3 degrees Celsius

LUCKNOW : Night temperatur­e plummeted further to 4.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday in the state capital – coldest in the season so far – as cold winds swept the city all day for the third consecutiv­e day. It was 4.4 degrees Celsius below normal. For Sunday, the forecast is that night temperatur­e in Lucknow may drop to 3 degrees Celsius with shallow to moderate fog likely in the morning and a clear sky thereafter. It was 5.5 degrees Celsius on Friday and 7.8 degrees on Thursday. So, the minimum temperatur­e dropped by 3.5 degrees between Thursday and Saturday.

The Met department has issued a warning of cold wave to severe cold wave and cold day to severe cold day conditions very likely at a few isolated places over East and West Uttar Pradesh. Dense fog is very likely to occur at isolated places over East Uttar Pradesh, said Met office director JP Gupta. Fursatganj and Churk remained coldest with 2.6 degrees Celsius, Bareilly 2.8, Shahjahanp­ur 3, Banda 4, Sultanpur 4.2, Barabaki 4.4, Bahraich 4.8, Hardoi 5, Gorakhpur 5.1, Kanpur City and Varanasi BHU 5.6, Etawah 6 and Balia 6.4 degrees Celsius, according to an IMD press release.

In Lucknow, a number of morning walkers and cycle enthusiast­s took to social media to post pictures of a thick layer of fog from different parts of the city. Some went to the famous tea stall at Lalbagh crossing for kulhar tea to beat the biting cold.

In view of the cold wave, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday instructed officials to ensure effective arrangemen­ts of bonfires at all major public places both in rural and urban areas. “It should be ensured that no homeless sleep in the open because the state government has set up adequate night shelters across the state to provide relief to poor and destitute,” reads a tweet sent out from the chief minister’s office Twitter handle.

“Proper arrangemen­ts should be made for safety and hygiene of those staying in night shelters. Blankets should be distribute­d and Covid-19 protocol should be adhered to at all night shelters,” reads another tweet.
