VARANASI: Assuring farmers that no one will be allowed to play with their interests, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said a handful of people were misleading them on the three agriculture reform laws brought by the Centre.

He also said no one would be allowed to grab the land of farmers and any mafia trying to do so would face misfortune.

The chief minister was addressing a gathering of farmers and locals in Mau district of eastern Uttar Pradesh after gifting developmental projects worth Rs 136 crore to the people of the district.

The chief minister said a lot of work had been done for doubling the income of farmers and the Centre had brought three laws in this connection.

The new reform laws gave freedom to sell their produce anywhere in the country and also liberate them from the clutches of middlemen, he added. “But a handful people are not happy with this. Therefore, they are misleading the farmers,” he said.

“These handful of people are creating the confusion that if any farmer gives his land for farming on contract, his land will be grabbed. This is a baseless claim,” he said.

“In contract farming, there is mutual understanding. If the farmer wants to give his land on contract, he can do so. Even after that, the farmer will remain the owner of his land. No one will be allowed to grab the land of farmers and play with the interests of farmers, youths and the poor,” he said.

He also warned, “If anyone tries to the grab the land of any farmer, you will see what misfortune the mafia faces.”

He further said the government had repeatedly said that the minimum support price would not be scrapped, rather it would continue but a handful of people were misleading the farmers. Mentioning that several schemes had been launched for farmers, he named the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme and PM Kisan Samman Yojana.

He also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would transfer Rs 18,000 crore into the accounts of over 9 crore farmers in the country on December 25.

Yogi said that his government provided employment to 3.75 lakh youths in the last 45 months of his government’s tenure.

Stating that Purvanchal Expressway would be the backbone of the region’s economy, he said it was being built to bring investment to eastern UP, generate employment for the local youths and check their exodus.
