Benzema leads Madrid to 3-1 win
MADRID: Karim Benzema scored one goal and set up another to lead Real Madrid to a 3-1 win at Eibar, keeping the defending champions level on points with Atletico Madrid at the top of the Spanish league.
Benzema opened the scoring in the sixth minute on Sunday when he controlled an expert pass from Rodrygo before knocking the ball past goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.
The French striker assisted Luka Modric in the 12th after he dribbled around a defender and found the Croatia midfielder arriving unmarked at the edge of the area. Kike Garcia got Eibar back in the game in the 28th when the striker scored a brilliant strike from outside the area. It wasn’t until deep into second half stoppage time that Lucas Vázquez beat Dmitrovic for Madrid’s third goal.
Man Utd thrash Leeds MANCHESTER: Manchester United bolstered their Premier League title aspirations by demolishing Leeds 6-2 in the first league meeting between the sides for 16 years on Sunday.
Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes scored twice each as United’s counter-attacking threat tore apart Marcelo Bielsa’s attacking approach to move the Red Devils up to third, five points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand.
“It could have been 12-4, it was that kind of game. It was fantastic from the first minute,” said United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “We had a plan to get after them, go forward and Scott gets two goals in the first three minutes.”
PSG held at Lille
PARIS: Paris Saint Germain missed a chance to return to the summit of Ligue 1 after they were held to a 0-0 draw at Lille, who retained pole position on Sunday ahead of Olympique Lyonnais.
Lille have 33 points and a superior goal difference to Lyon, who were 4-1 winners at Nice on Saturday, while thirdplaced PSG are a point adrift after squandering a number of opportunities in a scrappy contest at Lille.
The visitors missed Brazil forward Neymar with an ankle injury and looked toothless up front for large parts of the game.
