NEW DELHI: Daily new Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases dropped to 18,732 after six months on Saturday, shows data from the Union ministry of health and family welfare released on Sunday.
The new added cases were 18,653 on July 1, 2020.
With that, the country has reported less than 30,000 new cases of Covid-19 for about two weeks in a row, according to the government data.
On Sunday, 18,732 new cases were registered from across the country, taking the cumulative positive case load to 10,207,124.
“India has scaled a significant
peak in the fight against the global pandemic. India’s total Active Caseload has fallen to 2.78 lakh (2,78,690) today. This is the lowest after 170 days. The total active cases were 2,76,682 on 10th July, 2020. The country has reported a trend of sustained decrease in the number of active cases. India’s present active caseload consists of just 2.74% of India’s Total Positive Cases,” said health ministry in a statement issued on Sunday.
Daily recoveries have also outnumbered daily new cases successfully over the past one month, the government data shows, with all states currently having a recovery rate of at least 90%.
The total recovered cases stand at 97,61,538. The gap between recovered cases and
active cases, that is steadily increasing, is nearing 9.5 million, and presently stands at 94,82,848.
The difference in the new recoveries outnumbering new cases has also improved the recovery rate to 95.82% today. This difference is continuously growing as the recoveries outpace the daily new cases.
Nearly 72% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated to mainly 10 states.
Kerala has reported the maximum number of single day recoveries with 3,782 newly recovered cases. In West Bengal, 1,861 people have recovered, which is followed by Chhattisgarh that had reported 1,764 recovered cases in a single day.
As for new cases, about 77% are also concentrated in about 10 states.
Kerala reported the highest daily new cases at 3,527, followed by Maharashtra with 2,854 new cases and the third state in the list is West Bengal that recorded 1,253 new cases on Sunday.
The number of deaths due to Covid-19 in a day has also dropped to under 300 in the second day in a row, with 279 deaths reported from across the country on Sunday.
With that the total number of people having succumbed to the viral disease in the country has reached 147,938.
The first death due to Covid-19 in the country was reported on March 12.
“No doubt in India there have been fewer deaths but the disease has not completely settled yet. The disease transmission isn’t yet over; therefore, India cannot afford to drop its guard just as yet. It is very important to follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, and especially not encourage large scale gatherings where the risk of transmitting the disease is much higher,” said Jugal Kishore, head, community medicine department, Safdarjung Hospital.
“Even after getting a vaccine for the disease, it will be crucial for people to continue following Covid-appropriate behaviour such as wearing a mask, maintaining physical distancing, observing strict hand hygiene etc. Only then we will be able to control the disease fully,” he added.
