PRAYAGRAJ: Appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio show ‘Mann ki Baat’ for the efforts of Kaushambi jail inmates who are making cow coats and covers to save the cattle from winter chill brought a smile on the faces of the jail officials and inmates on Sunday.

Encouraged by jail authorities, the inmates of Kaushambi jail have been using their old blankets and clothes for making the coats and covers which are being distributed to cow shelters in the district.

In his radio show, the PM had made a detailed mention of the efforts made by jail inmates to save bovine from harsh winter.

“Saving the cows from the winter chill is worth appreciating and such works for cows and poor animals should be encouraged and praised,” Modi had said in his ‘Mann ki Baat’. “The inmates first collect old blankets and clothes and use them for making cow coats and covers for the shelters. Such works indicate that country is undergoing a great change and is becoming independent,” the PM added.

Such praise from the PM delighted the jail authorities.

“It is a matter of pride for Kaushambi Jail. It is an honour for Kaushambi Jail staff and inmates that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appreciated our efforts,” Kaushambi jail superintendent BS Mukund said.

“The jail inmates who make coats and covers including Ankit, Videshi, Kamlesh, Lavkush, Funny, Harish Chandra, Raju and others are feeling honoured and have resolved to make further efforts to save cows from the chilly weather,” he added.

UP Home department tweeted the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on its twitter handle and thanked the PM for recognizing and praising the efforts of jail inmates. “Now, all jail inmates and officials will work in this direction,” the tweet said.

Kaushambi jail inmates work in batches of 10 persons and have divided the various tasks amongst them. “Those who have experience of sewing and stitching train others for preparing coats and covers. A blanket is used for three years after which they become useless. These blankets are collected from other jails and are sewed together to make covers and coats for cattle. We now have set sight on producing 1000 coats and covers

each month. Hundreds of covers and cow coats are already being delivered to different cow shelters,” the jail superintendent said.
