Lucknow police commissionerate completes a year, gears up for future challenges
LUCKNOW: The police commissionerate system in the state capital completed a year on Friday. Implemented in the backdrop of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and anti-National Register of Citizens (NRC) violence, the system has proved effective in managing the law and order and traffic situation in the city.
The crackdown on violent anti-Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC protestors was the first challenge before the new system that focuses on ‘officer based policing.’ A total of 63 cases related to CAA and NRC were lodged and 572 accused were booked of which as many as 569 were arrested, according to a press statement issued on Friday.
In terms of managing law and order during mega events, the defence expo tested the policing system. The defence expo was successfully organised without any major untoward incident being reported. Over 12 lakh people visted the event, of which five lakh visited on a single day on February 8 last year.
The Covid-19 pandemic posed another challenge which was dealt with in a proper way. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) were laid down for handling situations related to Covid-19.
Police personnel were deployed at hotspots and round the clock patrolling was done to impose the lockdown.
Police also showed its humane face during the pandemic.
It distributed masks, sanitizers and food to people in need. Elderly people and those in emergency situations were helped promptly while following required Covid-19 guidelines.
Cases of financial fraud of over 50 lakh were solved. Special measures were taken to ensure availability of police at every corner of the city.
Efforts were also made to streamline flow of traffic across the city.
Two hundred and eighty cameras were installed at 70 crossing across the city. Also, 48 black spots were identified and seven quick reaction teams were formed to handle trafficrelated emergencies.
The efforts lead to a 227% rise in traffic challan, 193% rise in collection of summons charge and 143% increase in seizures.
